Hi, I'm Alyssa,
let me tell you about me!

Welcome to my writing portfolio! My name is Alyssa Klier and I am a senior at Wake Forest University. I am graduating in May 2021 with a major in Communication and minors in Writing and Sociology. Following my graduation, I will be attending Villanova University Charles Widger School of Law. Below I will tell you first what kinds of writing you can expect to find in this portfolio and second I will give a brief introduction about my portfolio.

Portfolio Structure

What Types Of Writing You Can Expect To Find

As a Communication major, I have executed assignments that have allowed me to develop verbal and written communication skills. I have had a wide range of writing assignments within my major coursework due to the broad nature of the discipline. Most note-able are the research papers I have done. In this portfolio, a qualitative and quantitative research paper will be shown.

I learned how to examine the world around me through a sociological lens due to my Sociology minor and within research opportunities. This portfolio will show a sociological qualitative research paper that allowed me to examine a systemic problem of a group I belong to as well as an argumentative essay that allowed me to sociologically interpret my actions relative to a larger system.

As a writing minor, I have had the opportunity to learn to how to critically examine texts and understand why choices are being made by a writer. The topic of "writing in rhetoric" will showcase a more academic and detail oriented form of writing within the writing minor, as opposed to a more creative or narrative form of writing that the writing minor also allows for. This portfolio will include a rhetorical analysis and a case study.

Learning how to write is not easy. That is why in my academic writing based classes for the writing discipline, I have learned how to explain how to write so that I can inform others of how to do so. With that, this portfolio will show two writing guides, one about how to write in the academic discipline of Sociology and one how to write in the professional email genre.

I not only have written for an academic audience, but I have also written for the general public. By knowing how to shift my language in a way that allows for a wider audience, I have been able to write online editorials that can be meaningful and easily accessible to anyone who wishes to read them. This portfolio will show an editorial that I wrote for an online journalism platform as well as a research paper repurposed to a non-profit organization.

During my time at Wake Forest, I have developed the most as an academic writer. In particular, I have been able to grow as a writer and develop an eclectic range of skills through my areas of study that have allowed me to enter into multiple discourse communities. This portfolio will highlight my academic writings based on the disciplines I have studied. Further, as a writing minor, I have written  range as a writing minor; therefore, I have broken up the writing discipline into categories that are representative of the genres that I have written in within the minor. The portfolio will be structured as follows: Writing In Communication, Writing In Sociology, Writing In Rhetoric, Writing Guides, and Online Editorials.
